Classic Chevy HT502

It's time for a classic Chevy upgrade -- installing a performance engine. You've got a lot to consider. Know, first of all, that there are two types, generally: partial or "base," and turn-key or "crate." Partial engines usually require mods or parts which aren't otherwise included, while crate engines come ready to install right out of the box.

The Chevrolet 502, part number 12568782, is an example of a partial engine. It's a short-block you can modify and adapt. with top-quality forged reciprocating parts along with a balancer, oil pan, timing chain set, and camshaft. It'll need cylinder heads, an intake, a carburetor, and an ignition system (none included) for a complete install. Though, if your vehicle originally had a big-block V8, you may be able to transfer parts like motor mounts, accessory drives, the exhaust manifold, and others; however, you may have to change certain components in your cooling, fuel, electrical, and exhaust systems. Just be sure you use an externally balanced flywheel if you plan to keep using an old manual transmission or install a new one. The engine itself is capable of 502 cubic inches displacement and runs at a max rpm of 5500.

The Chevrolet Performance Parts HT502 crate engine, part number 88890534, is an example of a crate engine. It's a complete big-block, with a Gen-VI cast-iron block and a forged 1053 steel crankshaft, plus oval-port cylinder heads, which are made of hard-wearing cast-iron, too. The compression ratio, 8.75:1, helps deliver 377 horsepower at 4500 rpm and 512 pound-feet of torque at 3300 rpm -- plenty of power for quick acceleration and hauling alike. The engine includes an oil pan, the valvetrain, valve covers, the timing set, a balancer, and an externally balanced 14-inch automatic transmission flexplate. Again, if you plan on using a manual transmission, use an externally balanced flywheel and 11-inch clutch assembly (neither included).

Both engines, However, are compatible with street vehicles from before 1976, plus just about any other off-road vehicle. They aren't for marine applications, though, or use with fuel injectors.
